Dan Hausner Shapes Exhibition 2019
January 4th - January 25th, 2019
The Strand Center for the Arts is excited to host “Shapes,” photographs in handmade frames created by Saranac Lake photographer and woodworker, Dan Hausner, in the Main Gallery.
“Shapes” was an exhibition of photographs in handmade frames by Saranac Lake photographer and woodworker, Dan Hausner. Although Hausner is most known for his rural and landscape photography, his work covers a broad range of subject matter. This show featured compositional photographs bordering on the abstract, set in frames made by the artist. It also featured several photos printed and produced in collaboration with textile artist Cris Winters.
Hausner worked as manual laborer, most recently on a professional trail crew and on organic farms. When not working, he enjoys spending time in the mountains and lakes around his home hiking, canoeing, and cross-country skiing. Hausner’s photography depicts mostly rural and natural scenes from Upstate New York and includes a wide range of styles and subject matter.
Rather than looking for certain types of images, Hausner tries to tell the story of the world around him through his images. His photos capture the unique feeling of a particular place at the moment when the image was taken. The frames for Hausner’s photographs are all designed and built by the artist. Each photograph is carefully paired with just the right combination of matte and frame so that all three work together as one piece of art. His frames feature a mix of locally produced woods and reclaimed material. In addition to using his woodworking skills to create his own frames, Hausner specializes in making small functional pieces.
