Carol Hochreiter Journey Exhibition 2019
· August 2nd - August 30th, 2019
Painter, Carol Hochreiter, was excited to display her exhibition of artwork entitled, “Journey,” in the Main Gallery at The Strand Center for the Arts.
Although she started as an art major in college, Carol Hochreiter pursued a career in public education for 32 years. She retired from teaching English and serving as a school librarian in 2001. Hochreiter attended her first watercolor workshop at Valcour Conference Center. Since then, she has been studying and painting and showing her work throughout New York State.
Hochreiter is an experimental painter who works intuitively and enjoys using unexpected materials and approaches in her art. She works in watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, ink, collage, and mixed media.
In this show, Hochreiter has used negative painting techniques and opaque colors in some of her new pieces. Concerning her recent works, she states: “Often an idea morphs into something unexpected. I enjoy the freedom and uncertainty that I experience when I paint. I plan and think for extended periods of time, and then I lose myself in the process of painting. In my most recent works, I have painted figures, most of them unplanned and inspired by the painting process itself.
For this show, I also experimented with painting on acetate, a surface I have never used before. I used acrylic, watercolor, and resists when I worked. And then, I created photomontages, which incorporate my husband, Frank’s photos. I am incredibly pleased with the results of our blended work.”
