Opening Reception: Friday August 5, 2016 from 5:30-7:30pm
Show on View in Main Gallery: August 5-26, 2016
The Strand Center for the Arts is thrilled to host painter Gharan Burton in the Main Gallery in August, 2016.
Burton was born and raised on the Caribbean island of Dominica, receiving his college education in painting, sculpture, and metalworking in the United States. Through the years he has shown his artwork in many locations including Dominica, Tortola and the BVI, St Marten, Barbados, Botswana, Brooklyn, and, last but not least, here in Plattsburgh and the surrounding area.
Concerning this exhibit, Burton stated that, “The work in this show consists of paintings either done while in the tropics or it is work that was inspired by the island life.” He went on to add that, “My work uses strong colors and the layering of paint to build up textures and desired patterns. My primary painting tool to do this is the palette knife which gives me a more “sculptural” feel in the paint application process.”
“I met Gharan years ago during the weekly figure drawing classes we now have here at the Strand Gallery,” stated Museum Coordinator, David Monette. “And I’ve been a fan of his work ever since. So to be displaying his artwork in our gallery is very exciting.”
The exhibit of Burton’s artwork will be on view in The Strand Center Main Gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh from August 5-26, 2016. The Opening Reception will take place Friday, August 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM and is free and open to the public.
Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.
