The Strand Center for the Arts is excited to host painter Catherine Hartung in the Main Gallery on February 2, 2018. This upcoming exhibit will open in The Strand Center Main Gallery on Friday, February 2 and a reception that is free and open to the public will be held from 5:30-7:30 pm that evening.
Catherine Hartung is currently a member of a NorthWind Fine Arts, a cooperative gallery located in Saranac Lake. She graduated from SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Fine Arts, and a concentration in jewelry and metals. Upon graduation, Hartung received the college’s Distinguished Art Award. After college, the detail, planning, and execution of her metalwork sculptures helped her transition into a career as a graphic artist. After working in graphics for a couple of decades, she returned to her fine arts roots, creating landscape, still life, and, more recently, abstract paintings, using watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and oils.
Concerning her work in the show, Hartung stated that she, “finds inspiration in the austere and rugged beauty of the Adirondack Mountains where she now lives,” and her work has been accepted in numerous juried shows both regional and national. For instance, she won “Best in Show” at BluSeed Studios in 2017 and at The Strand Juried Art Show in 2016, as well as numerous first and second place prizes at other exhibitions.
“I feel like Cathy’s paintings capture the essence of nature in an unexpected, unique way,” stated gallery director, David Monette. “They can be light and airy, or more abstract and subdued. Either way, they are executed with consummate skill, and it's truly a wonderful collection of work to have in our gallery.”
The exhibit of Hartung’s artwork will be on view in The Strand Center Main Gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh from February 2-23, 2018. The Opening Reception will take place Friday, February 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM and is free and open to the public.
