Developing a Character

Saturday, January 6: 11am-1pm
Instructor: Mallory Valk
Ages 8-18

Breathe life and excitement into your next performance or audition! In this class, students will learn how to develop a character based on just a few lines of script, as well as analysis skills for longer works such as a monologue or play.

Beat Winter's Chill with Contemporary

Beat the cold – come inside and get moving! Join Heather on stage for a contemporary workshop great for dancers intermediate to advanced. Parents are invited to watch the last 10 minutes of class.

YOUTH VISUAL ARTS

Trolls Melted Crayon Art

Saturday, January 6: 9-11:30am
Instructor: Ashlee Goddeau
Ages 7-18
Location: Strand Center Community Room

Create your very own Troll with wild and crazy melted crayon hair! Learn to recycle crayons by turning them into works of art! Students will apply and melt crayons onto a canvas while combining other painting and drawing skills, creating unique works of art that are unlike any other.

Tessellate and Create

Saturday, January 20: 9-11:30am
Instructor: Ashlee Goddeau
Ages 7-18
Location: Strand Center Community Room

Students will be enlightened on M. C. Escher’s work, making connections between math and art in this class. Escher is known widely for his beautiful tessellations (patterns of flat shapes with no overlaps or gaps). Students will create their own tessellations with a variety of techniques, turning ordinary shapes into unique works of art!

Dancing Lady Canvas

Saturday, January 20: 12-2pm
Instructor: Lorrie Mandigo
Ages 13+
Location: Strand Center Community Room

Using alcohol ink and an 8x10" canvas, celebrate sisterhood and femininity with vibrant colors! This class is great for beginners all the way to advanced artists. Lorrie will guide students in the process of using alcohol inks to create a colorful piece of art.

Tree of Life Alcohol Ink Tile

Thursday, February 8: 5:30-7:30pm

This customizable tree will make a wonderful project to do with a loved one, or a great gift for Valentine’s Day! No experience needed – join Lorrie and learn about alcohol ink techniques and see how easy it is to bring life to your tile! Lorrie will also provide a couple additional projects as time allows to practice your new skills.

Melted Crayon Art Heart

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, learn to recycle crayons into a lovely work of “heart” and make a great gift for a loved one that will hold a photo inside when finished! Students will apply and melt crayons onto a canvas while combining other painting and drawing skills.

Intro to Cartooning and Anime

Monday-Thursday, February 19-22: 1-4pm
Instructor: David Monette
Ages 8-12
Location: Strand Center Community Room

Learn the basics of illustrative drawing in the 4-day foundational course for cartooning and anime. We’ll explore the principles of 2-dimensional art and incorporate tricks and techniques to create realistic 3-dimensional drawings like perspective, light sources, and foreshortening. We’ll create unique characters, stories, and worlds! Mediums including pen and ink, pastels, illustration markers, and more will be used throughout the week. Bring your imagination!

St. Patty's Day Melted Crayon Art

Saturday, March 10:9-11:30am

Whether you are Irish or just enjoy rainbows, this St. Patty’s Day crayon art will be the most colorful artwork in your house! Students will apply and melt recycled crayons on canvas while combining other painting and drawing skills. This project will inspire you to go for the gold!

Adirondack Alcohol Ink

Thursday, March 15: 5:30-7:30pm
Instructor: Lorrie Mandigo
Ages 13+
Location: Strand Center Community Room

Alcohol inks and a ceramic tile will be used to create a beautiful Adirondack mountain scene. Lorrie takes you step-by-step in how to use alcohol ink to resemble watercolor paintings, but with the vibrancy only the ink can deliver. Lorrie will also provide a couple additional projects as time allows to practice your new skills.

Introduction to Spinning Yarn

Saturday, February 3: 10am-2pm
Instructor: Heidi Fortsch
Ages 13+

Join Heidi and work with various types of wool to create hand-spun yarns. Bring your fully functioning spinning wheel and let’s get to it!
